When the world has dulled our edges & we've been forced to think too much & the dog needs walking & the dishes washed & everything else left undone sulphurs the air with judgement, we need a place where we can fit & find ourselves again, pressed against another human, lip-locked heart to heart, swollen skin to skin. We twist in unimagined ways & drink from the rivers we become, spoon naked & exhausted, dreaming animal dreams only to rise before the clock & spread fresh wings. We beat the cock's call & rival the coming of the sun, we know what it's about, we pull back the veil. Gravity eases its grip, we bounce & laugh, we are Whitman's wild children. Our very flesh becomes a great poem.

The Twentieth Secret Love Poem

Different instruments part us in public.

He focuses on the conductor,

fingers foreplay behind the music sheet.

Afterwards we exit separately.

Nights the cello between my legs vibrates

like his throat under my touch.

Our bed used to sleep a dead musician.

We discuss symphonies, study Mahler,

light cigarettes and forget to smoke.

He leaves his French horn beside

bottles of bourbon, the empty fruit bowl,

crystal flutes. In the half-light, it glitters.

I run my tongue up and down

the valves. When we perform on stage,

he never polishes the brass.
